FLEX: the Florida Experimental Film/Video Festival 2014

http://www.flexfest.org/festival2014.html

Rei Hayama
Born in Kanagawa in 1987. After study painting, Rei started filmmaking in 2008. Rei's experimental films summon unknown myths, unidentified countries and faceless characters in an uncertain era, seeking the boundaries between the worlds of human and natural existence as an attempt to get a glimpse of "others": wild animals and forests, as opposed to humans and urban spaces. Wide range of her media is more freely crossed and developed through physical side of moving images like a development or re-photography.

Thinking about time and timing.Born in Saitama, Japan 1983 December 30th and based in Tokyo. I’m thinking about composition for the simple harmony and structure, and improvising by music instruments and non-music instruments. Before turning to electronic music and improvisation I was playing the guitar on a rock band in early 2000s. Now I’m mainly using audio mixer, guitar and other objects (such as glass, plastic bag and strings) but it depends on the circumstances. I’m a member of Hello (with Takahiro Kawaguchi, Satoshi Kanda) and a rock band "likea". There are more than 15 recordings, such as solo album [in the suburb] from cherry music (jp), [niju] from ristretto (pt), “hello” (takahiro kawaguchi + shinjiro yamaguchi) [hello] from ftarri (jp) and [november 9, 2007] by sawako + richard chartier + shinjiro yamaguchi from 12k term (USA), and performances at Tokyo (uplink factory, Super deluxe, Kawagoe Art Museum, Ueno Royal Museum Gallery, bankart 1929, Jiyu Gakuen Myonichikan), Chicago, London (ICA) and Lisbon.

Shinkan Tamaki

Josh Lewis
Josh Lewis creates work in film, video, photography and performance as a gateway into the mechanisms of human need, guilt, nostalgia, and transcendence. His film-based work revolves heavily around chemical experimentation and an unconventional, often derelict approach to darkroom procedures. He is a firm believer in manual knowledge and the transformative potential of an immediate bodily struggle with the elements of the natural world.

Kenneth Zoran Curwood

Kenneth Zoran Curwood is a Brooklyn based artist working in film, animation and sculpture. He received a BA (concentration in Sculpture) from School of Visual Arts in 1995. His 16mm films combine traditional animation practices (cel, rotoscope, stop-motion) with many bygone special effects techniques (slit-scan, optical printing, tinting, toning). He has exhibited his work locally at Anthology Film Archives, Canada, Union Docs, Monkeytown, Secret Project Robot, Vaudeville Park, CREAM Gallery, and Heliopolis. He has taught workshops at Columbia University, Mono No Aware, and Camera Club New York. He is a member of the collective DecayNY.

[+] is an artist collective and curatorial project formed by three of Japan’s most exciting artists working with the moving image — Makino Takashi, Shinkan Tamaki and Rei Hayama — whose ongoing critique and research in experimental film aspires to open up new possibilities in film culture, yet at the same time questioning film’s very materiality.

Working with films and audio-visual media of innovative quality that resist existing categories, they’ve screened, performed, published and exhibited throughout Japan and internationally. They’ve collaborated with the likes of Jim O’Rourke and participated in prestigious international platforms such as the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

For the second leg of TYO>MNL>SGN, [+] will present six of their individual film works as well as two film performances: [Space Noise] by Makino Takashi and [ULTRA spectrum] by Shinkan Tamaki. This edition will also see them in dialogue with current Green Papaya Art Projects residents and fellow moving image explorers, the local film collective Tito & Tita.

[+] in Manila is part 2 of the TYO>MNL>SGN platform of collabs and performances, with a focus in advancing awareness of new directions in sound and music, and film and the moving image. Taking place as 2 instalments in the months of July and August 2013, TYO>MNL>SGN takes 2 groups of Japanese artists to Manila and Saigon to engage in activities that encourage interaction with their counterpart artists and cultural communities in each of the respective cities.

TYO>MNL>SGN is organised by Green Papaya Art Projects and managed by SABAW/Fete de la WSK in Manila, in partnership with iLL – the institute of Lower Learning in Saigon, and made possible with the support from the Japan Foundation Manila.
